Boston Housing Authority Development Division. Washington Park Urban Renewal Plan (first).

December 2, 1958

The plan covers 186 acres, calls for demolishing some 25% of the housing stock in the neighborhood, and displacing some 1,500 families. Encouraged by the community, a new plan (second) is released in 1961 that covers 502 acres, calls for demolishing 2,600 housing units, displacing some 2,200 families, and building 1,500 new housing units, three new schools, two branch libraries, new police and fire stations, a new court house, YMCA and a Boys & Girls Club, a shopping mall, and a health center. The plan receives final approval from the Boston City Council on February 18, 1963, and from the federal government on April 22, 1963.
